See how Silhouette Soft® works

Silhouette Soft® uses a double action effect to restore smoother and more toned skin, but also a more shapely face.

To meet this requirement, Silhouette Soft® combines two effects: An immediate repositioning of the tissue and a gradual regeneration of collagen.

The repositioning effect is immediate and discreet. It is the result of tissue compression and skin elevation at the time of implanting the suture. After inserting the suture, the doctor applies slight pressure on the treated area. In this way, the doctor reshapes the contours of your face and makes it visibly smoother.

The regenerating effect is gradual: Poly L-lactic acid (PLLA), the principal component of Silhouette Soft® is a well-known polymer that has been used for many years in a number of biomedical and pharmaceutical applications: suture thread, orthopaedic pins, rods, screws and nails for bone fractures. It is because this polymer shows excellent biocompatability and is biodegradable that such applications have been developed.

The small cones on the Silhouette Soft® Suture provide traction and fixation points, a natural foreign body reaction then reinforces this, by the build-up of new collagen formation. This action is what helps restore shapeliness to the face and neck.

What are the steps

During your consultation, your physician will evaluate your expectations and review your medical history.

As there are some risks associated with all treatments, you need to fully disclose your medical history prior to treatment. Some skin allergies and neurological conditions, or medications can jeopardise your safety or results.

Before conducting the treatment your physician will evaluate your needs and explain where the Silhouette Soft® sutures will be placed using a marking pen. The treated areas will be sterilised, and you may be given a topical anaesthetic to numb the area prior to the suture’s insertion.

Due to the sutures being inserted into the sub-cutaneous tissue there is relatively low level of discomfort during and after your treatment. Once the suture has been applied, the doctor performs slight compression of the tissue to reshape it by hand and to obtain the desired lifting effect. The non-inserted ends of the suture are cut off.

The number of sutures applied depends on the skin laxity and condition.

The insertion of Silhouette Soft®® elicits a minimal inflammatory reaction, this is normal and required. After placement patients may experience side some side effects, This may include minor pain, swelling and bruising.

The retightening effect is immediate : thanks to bi-directional cones distributed over the suspension suture that keep the skin in an elevated position. And the regenerative action is gradual : the main component of the suture (Polylactic acid: PLLA) during reabsorbtion stimulates the body so that it produces its own collagen. This action, which continues over time, restores the contours of the face and offers long term results.

Your physician will provide you with post-treatment recommendations and an aftercare programme to follow to ensure the best possible result.

FAQ’s

Silhouette Soft® directional threads are made in the USA. They have been developed after 6 years of research in permanent suspension sutures with cones used in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Unlike more traditional barbed suture threads, with their unique cone technology, Silhouette Soft® sutures remain in place, preventing any risks of migration or extrusion.

This type of thread lift works in 2 ways. There is a lifting action for instant yet discrete results. As soon as the threads have been placed beneath the skin, the treatment area is redefined by compressing the tissue and lifting the skin, which is then anchored in place by the cones. Secondly, there is a regenerating action for gradual and natural results. As it is being resorbed, the PLA acts in the subcutaneous tissue and stimulates fibroblast activation and collagen production, thus restoring shapeliness to the face.

Silhouette Soft® suture threads are constructed of L-Polylactic-acid (PLA). PLA is a well-known polymer that has been used for many years in a number of biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. It has a long history of use as an absorbable (dissolvable) sutures, and in orthopaedic fixation devices such as pins, rods and screws. PLA is biocompatible and bioresorbable, and its breakdown process has been extensively studied. It is degraded by metabolic processes into lactic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance in the body. PLA is generally well tolerated and allergic reactions are exceedingly rare. Once the suture is placed under the skin, PLA acts by stimulating the fibroblasts in the skin to increase collagen production. This action continues over time, which helps to increase the volume and restores shapeliness to the face gradually and naturally. PLA is degraded by the body in approximately 30 months.
Silhouette Soft® is the only reabsorbable suture with bidirectional resorbable cones. The cones provide anchorage points into the subcutaneous tissue. Collagen induction around the cones creates a solid support of the soft tissue, preventing migration or extrusion. The entire surface of the cones is smooth and therefore they do not feel “prickly” under the skin and are more comfortable than the barbed sutures that have been traditionally used for thread lifting.

Silhouette Soft® monofilaments are made of Polylactic Acid (PLLA) while the cones are made of poly (L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA). They are two biocompatible polymers frequently used in medical devices for their outstanding tolerance in the body.

No special preparation is required prior to Silhouette Soft treatment. However, we recommend that you discuss your expectations and ask your doctor any questions you have before starting treatment. Inform the doctor of any treatment you have already received and of any medicines you are currently taking.

Like all procedures of this type there is a possibility of side effects, although not everybody experiences them. These side effects include infection, minimal acute inflammatory tissue reaction, pain, swelling and oedema. Transient brusing may also occur. Sometimes, a slight depression or skin irregularity may appear at the entry points. These inconveniences should disappear a few days after treatment.

If you experience any side effects, you should talk to your doctor.

Patients with foreign body sensitivity or known or suspected allergies to implant or instrument materials in particular plastic/biomaterial should not undergo the procedure. Do NOT use in patients with active sepsis or infection, active (or history of) autoimmune disease, patients under 18 years of age, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or patients with limited ability or un-willingness to follow post-treatment recommendations.

No, the treatment is performed under local anaesthetic, avoiding pain during insertion of the suture.

  • Apply cold packs immediately after the procedure if required (Cold packs should be wrapped to avoid direct contact with skin and insertion point)
  • Take analgesia e.g. paracetamol in case of pain (2-3 days)
  • Refrain from applying make-up for as long as possible (minimum 24 hours)
  • Sleep face up, in an elevated position on pillows (3-5 nights)
  • Wash, shave and dry face gently without rubbing or massaging (5 days)
  • Avoid excessive face and neck movements (2 weeks)
  • Avoid over-exposure to direct sunlight and do not use tanning beds (2 weeks)
  • Avoid sports, in particular high impact sports e.g. running (2 weeks)
  • Do not use saunas or hammams (3 weeks)
  • Avoid dental surgery (3 weeks)
  • Avoid face and neck massages and face and neck aesthetic treatments (4 weeks)
