PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Injections

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy is a new medical technology which involves the patient’s blood being extracted and spun down to obtain a concentrate of platelets which are then injected into an area of the body for the purpose of promoting healing, rejuvenation and slowing down the ageing process.

Is PRP right for me?

Natural ageing of the skin means that skin texture and appearance deteriorate over time.

An exciting new approach appealing to people seeking a more natural method to facial rejuvenation, is regeneration with your own cells, more specifically autologous platelet rich plasma (PRP).

PRP is being used successfully with thousands of patients across the globe to rejuvenate and slow down the ageing process.

PRP treatments are suitable for:

  • Tired and dry skin, laxity of skin, uneven pigmentation
  • Signs of skin ageing
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Overall texture and tone improvement
  • Certain types of alopecia or general hair thinning
  • People who may experience risk of allergic reactions from other treatments
  • People looking for a natural treatment using the body’s own healing process

What else is PRP used for?

Because Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy promotes the body’s own healing and rejuvenation processes it can be used just about anywhere tissue regeneration is required or beneficial.

Areas where PRP are being successfully utilised include:

  • Fat transfer for cosmetic procedures
  • Wound healing and tissue repair
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Osteoarthritis, including:
    • Tennis elbow
    • Golfer’s elbow
    • Knee tendinosis
    • Rotator cuff tears
    • Achilles tendinosis
    • Plantar Fasciitis
    • And more…
  • Stimulate hair growth

PRP is suitable for men and women suffering certain types of alopecia or general hair thinning, looking to prevent more hair loss and those not interested in surgery. It is ideal to start treatment at first sign of hair loss and thinning.

The PRP procedure

Blood is collected from you in 1-2 specially designed tubes which are then centrifuged for 5-10 minutes. During centrifugation, a patented gel within the tubes isolates PRP from other unrequired cells within the blood.

PRP is then ready for application by injection back into the skin.

Following the procedure, patients can resume normal activity almost immediately.

FAQ’s

Because PRP uses your own blood, the risk of immunological reactions or contamination with transmissible diseases is eliminated.

PRP is well suited for most people, talk to your doctor to see if PRP is suitable for you.

PRP is an autologous treatment, meaning that it is only your own cells being put back into your skin.

8-24ml of your blood is collected in a similar way to a blood test.

This is spun down in a centrifuge using the specially designed PRP tube that separates the PRP from the red blood cells. The PRP portion of the tube is then drawn up into a syringe ready for re-injection into the skin.

A tiny quantity of platelet activator called Calcium Chloride may be added, which is found naturally in your blood.

Topical anaesthetic cream may be applied before injection, meaning re-injection causes little to no pain.

This may vary depending on your skin condition, lifestyle and your expectations. 3 treatments, 4-6 weeks apart is normal. Once you and the doctor are happy with the results you can simply maintain the look with top-up treatments maybe every 12-24 months.

Most patients go straight back to work after the procedure

  • Injections can cause minor bruising and swelling
  • Some patients may want to touch up the treated area with make-up before resuming their day
  • Some patients report a tingling sensation after injection

Typically first results are visible 2 weeks weeks after treatment and full results around 4 months after, as platelets stimulate the release of growth factors which assist in collagen regeneration. Increasing the collagen in your skin means over time your skin will appear rejuvenated, younger and fresher looking. Results will vary from one individual to the other.

Treatment results vary however in most patients the results last up to 18 months. Touch up treatments will maintain the results as well.
